Product Description
The Instron 8800MT is a fully digital servo-hydraulic test controller that closes the control loop at 10 kHz while simultaneously acquiring data from up to 8 sensor channels at the same rate. Designed as the core electronics for dynamic and fatigue testing systems, it controls 1 or 2 servo-hydraulic actuators in closed loop using position, load, or strain feedback. The controller's adaptive PID algorithm continuously recalculates control parameters at 1 kHz, automatically compensating for changes in specimen stiffness as a crack propagates, a composite delaminates, or a metal coupon yields. This eliminates the manual re-tuning that conventional PID controllers require between test phases.
What waveforms and test types does the 8800MT support?
The internal waveform generator spans 0.00001 Hz to 1,000 Hz and produces sine, triangle, square, haversine, havertriangle, ramp, dual-ramp, trapezoidal, and random waveforms—all at 32-bit resolution. Combined with the 10 kHz loop rate, this enables high-cycle fatigue tests into the kilohertz range, low-cycle fatigue with complex strain-controlled profiles, fracture mechanics tests (da/dN and KIC per ASTM E647 and E399), and spectrum loading that replays real-world service histories. The controller also supports external analog input per axis for road-load data replay from multi-axis simulation rigs. Instron's Console software provides the primary user interface, with WaveMatrix for advanced dynamic tests and Bluehill Universal for static tensile, compression, and flexure testing.
Can the 8800MT upgrade an older test frame?
Yes—the 8800MT is explicitly designed for controller retrofits on servo-hydraulic test frames from Instron (8000, 1340, 8500 series) and other manufacturers including MTS, Schenck, Dartec, Zwick, Shimadzu, and Mayes. Instron has completed over 5,000 such upgrades worldwide. A retrofit typically replaces the aging analog or early-digital control electronics while retaining the existing hydraulic power unit, actuator, load frame, and grips. The controller auto-recognizes Instron transducers and supports manual calibration for third-party load cells, extensometers, and LVDTs. The result is a modern 10 kHz digital control system on a mechanically sound legacy frame, extending its service life by a decade or more at a fraction of the cost of a new test system.
