Product Description

The SYSTEM 3R MacroJunior is a compact 3-jaw reference chuck system designed specifically for EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) electrode clamping — not for lathe turning. The patented 3-point reference system (X, Y, and Z datums) provides 0.002 mm repeatability when changing electrodes, making it suitable for unmanned and automated EDM production cells. Unlike larger Macro system chucks, the MacroJunior places the positioning tongues on the chuck rather than the electrode holder, significantly reducing per-holder cost for shops running large electrode inventories.

What makes the MacroJunior reference system different?

The MacroJunior uses a drawbar-actuated locking mechanism that pulls the electrode holder into three precision-ground reference surfaces. A movable drawbar design eliminates bending forces during locking, preserving alignment. Each reference position provides 3 × 120° fixed indexing, and the system is compatible with MacroCombi chucks that accept both MacroJunior and standard Macro holders for mixed-production flexibility. Independent testing has shown the MacroJunior offers greater torsional rigidity than many larger and more expensive competing systems.

Which MacroJunior model fits your application?

Model Type Mounting Weight Key Feature
3R-400.34 Manual Machine spindle / table 1.6 kg Classic spindle chuck, requires drawbar 3R-405.11
3R-400.24-11 Manual Machine spindle 0.8 kg Compact in-built spindle chuck
3R-410.31-5 Manual HP Machine table 3.5 kg High Performance, 5 ground surfaces
3R-410.1-M Pneumatic Machine spindle / fixture 1.5 kg Turbo locking with air-blast Z-reference cleaning
3R-422.2 Manual WEDM system 1.8 kg 6 kN clamping, 7 Nm torque, axial locking

Pneumatic models require 6 ± 1 bar air pressure and offer turbo-function locking for high-throughput automated cells. Manual models use a 4 Nm recommended tightening torque. Maximum flushing pressure is 15 bar for manual chucks.

Can the MacroJunior be used for turning applications?

No. The MacroJunior is an EDM electrode clamping system, not a lathe chuck. It is designed for holding graphite or copper electrodes during EDM sinking operations, not for rotating workpiece clamping. For lathe turning applications, a conventional scroll chuck, collet chuck, or power chuck should be used instead. The product category label in some industrial directories may describe it as a turning chuck, but this is incorrect — SYSTEM 3R official documentation consistently identifies it as EDM tooling.
