Product Description
The MFW from Elektra Elektronik (EES) is a modular powerline-based I/O telecontrol system that uses carrier-frequency transmission over existing power cables to extend digital and analogue I/O signals across plant sites without laying dedicated communication cabling. A single network supports up to 32 stations and 512 I/O modules, configurable via DIP switches for station address, module number, and signal type. The system operates at a carrier frequency of 109.4 kHz (Class 122), which does not require frequency registration or operating permission in most jurisdictions.
What I/O modules are available in the MFW Powerline system?
Digital input modules are offered in voltage variants covering 12 V, 24 V, 60 V, 110 V, and 220 V AC/DC — each with appropriate input resistance and galvanic isolation rated at 4 kVeff between the signal input and the system supply. Digital relay output modules provide contacts rated up to 250 V AC / 2 A (resistive) or 30 V DC / 2 A, with a minimum switching capability of 1.2 V / 1 mA for LED compatibility. Each station can mix input and output modules, and an integrated alive relay contact signals station health. Master modules (MF-PLM15) and outstation modules (UF-PLM15) are available with RS-232 interfaces supporting the RK 512 protocol for integration with PLC and SCADA systems.
How does the MFW system handle fault conditions and network topology?
The MFW network supports star, ring, and tree topologies, with automatic fault detection at each station indicated by LED and a dedicated alive relay contact. Following a fault clearance, stations automatically resume communication. The Hamming distance exceeds 6, providing strong immunity against electrical interference on the power line. Surge arresters and carrier-frequency traps are recommended for installations with long cable runs. The MFW Powerline system can interconnect with other MFW transmission media — radio, telephone, and fibre optic — and with third-party systems via protocols including IEC 60870-5-101, allowing a single telecontrol network to span diverse physical transmission paths.
