Product Description

The Lyle® Informer™ is BMG's dedicated automation platform for Lyle thermoforming machines, engineered to deliver faster cycle times and tighter process control in packaging production environments. Built on a Mitsubishi control backbone, it integrates adaptive-tuning servo drives, high-resolution absolute encoders, and a fiber optic communication network into a single coordinated system.

What control architecture does the Informer™ use?

The platform is built on a Mitsubishi automation ecosystem, pairing an industrial-grade processor with adaptive-tuning servo amplifiers. Each servo drive continuously adjusts to mechanical resonance and vibration conditions, maintaining stability even as tooling wear and environmental factors shift over long production runs. A high-speed fiber optic network replaces conventional copper wiring for motion commands and feedback — this eliminates electrical noise interference that can degrade signal integrity in the high-EMI environment of a thermoforming line.

How does the servo drive system improve thermoforming cycle times?

The servo drives operate at a 2500 Hz frequency response, which shortens positioning time by reacting to load changes within microseconds rather than milliseconds. High-resolution absolute encoders (4 million pulses per revolution) eliminate the need for homing routines at every power-up, since each axis knows its exact position immediately. Combined, these two characteristics reduce dead time between cycles and enable tighter synchronization across the platen, plug, and eject axes — directly increasing throughput on high-cavitation tools.

What HMI and connectivity options are available?

The standard GOT (Graphic Operation Terminal) HMI provides an intuitive graphical interface with built-in SD card backup for program and recipe storage. Recipe memory is unlimited, so packaging manufacturers can store complete parameter sets for every tool and material combination without manual re-entry during changeovers. For remote access, an optional VNC server allows authorized personnel to view and control the HMI from any smartphone, tablet, or PC on the network — useful for off-shift monitoring or troubleshooting without walking the production floor. Multi-language HMI support and biometric operator authentication are also available as options.

What safety features are integrated into the drive system?

Every servo amplifier and variable-frequency drive on the Informer™ platform supports Safe Torque Off (STO) — a hardware-level safety function that removes drive power to the motor while leaving the control electronics energized. This means safety events trigger an instantaneous stop at the drive level rather than waiting for a safety PLC to de-energize a contactor, reducing stopping distance. Because STO is implemented per axis, a safety breach on one motion axis does not force a full machine shutdown — non-affected axes can hold position or complete a controlled retract, which helps protect tooling during an E-stop event.
