Product Description
The VM 5000 is WAGNER's safety control unit for manual electrostatic liquid coating — the bridge between the operator's spray gun and the high-voltage generation that charges atomized paint droplets for wrap-around transfer efficiency. Unlike a simple high-voltage power supply, the VM 5000 actively manages safety interlocks: it continuously monitors whether the spray gun is properly grounded through the gun cable's grounding conductor. If this ground connection is interrupted — from a damaged cable, loose connector, or operator error — the VM 5000 cuts high voltage within milliseconds, before the operator can receive a shock or a spark can ignite solvent vapors. This grounding supervision is what earns the system its ATEX certification for Zone 2 installation with a Zone 1-rated gun.
How does the linear high-voltage characteristic prevent spark discharge?
As the spray gun tip approaches the grounded workpiece, the electrical resistance between the electrode and the part decreases, and the current (µA) rises. In a fixed-voltage system, this can lead to spark discharge when the gun gets too close — the voltage exceeds the dielectric breakdown strength of the air gap. The VM 5000 implements a linear voltage reduction characteristic: as the gun-to-part distance decreases and current rises, the controller automatically reduces the output voltage to maintain a safe operating point below the Paschen breakdown threshold for the air gap. The operator notices no change in coating quality because the electrostatic field strength at the optimal spraying distance (typically 200–300 mm) remains unchanged — the reduction only occurs at distances closer than normal spraying position, protecting against accidental contact without compromising transfer efficiency during normal operation.
How are the three recipe presets used in production?
The VM 5000 stores three complete parameter sets — nominal voltage and current limit — that can be recalled directly from a button on the spray gun or the control unit. A typical configuration: Preset 1 = standard coating (e.g., 60 kV, 80 µA limit for direct-to-metal primer); Preset 2 = metallic basecoat (e.g., 40 kV, 50 µA limit — metallics require lower voltage to prevent the aluminum flakes from standing up and creating a mottled appearance); Preset 3 = recoating or touch-up (e.g., 80 kV, 100 µA limit for maximum wrap-around on complex geometries). The ability to switch presets from the gun eliminates walking back to the control unit between coating steps, reducing cycle time in batch production where parts of different geometries or coating requirements pass through the same booth.
