How does terahertz measurement work for industrial gauging?

The control unit generates ultra-short terahertz pulses (1.5 GHz–5 THz bandwidth) and transmits them through fiber-coupled sensors to the sample surface. Each material interface — air-to-coating, coating-to-substrate, layer-to-layer — reflects a portion of the pulse. By measuring the time-of-flight between reflected pulses with sub-picosecond resolution, the system calculates individual layer thicknesses to better than 1 µm precision.
