Product Description
The DJI N3 is a professional-grade flight controller positioned between the entry-level NAZA-M and the flagship A3 in DJI's multirotor autopilot family. It is built for custom-assembled industrial and aerial photography drones — from lightweight quadcopters carrying a mirrorless camera to heavy-lift octocopters such as the DJI S1000+ carrying a broadcast gimbal. The dual IMU (inertial measurement unit) architecture monitors both sensor suites continuously; if the primary IMU's gyroscope or accelerometer measurements drift beyond tolerance, the flight controller cuts over to the backup IMU without interrupting the control loop, preventing the altitude drop or attitude excursion that a single-IMU controller would experience during sensor failure.
What airframes and motors does it support?
The N3 supports three airframe classes — quadcopter (I4 and X4 layouts), hexacopter (I6, X6, Y6, and IY6), and octocopter (X8, I8, and V8) — selectable from DJI Assistant 2 during initial configuration. Eight motor outputs (M1–M8) drive standard PWM ESCs at 400 Hz refresh frequency; an additional iESC port connects to DJI's intelligent ESCs that return real-time motor speed, current, and temperature telemetry to the flight controller. For hexacopter and octocopter configurations, motor-failure protection detects a single propulsion failure and re-allocates thrust across the remaining rotors to execute a controlled descent, maintaining yaw stability throughout.
How does the SDK and expansion system work?
Two expansion pathways are available. The CAN2 port connects to DJI's ecosystem — GPS-Compass module, Lightbridge 2 digital video downlink, DJI D-RTK GNSS for centimeter-level positioning, and third-party CAN bus peripherals. The API port exposes a serial interface for the Onboard SDK, allowing developers to run custom flight control algorithms, computer vision processors, or payload controllers on a companion computer (such as a Raspberry Pi or NVIDIA Jetson) while the N3 handles the low-level stabilization, attitude control, and sensor fusion. The Mobile SDK communicates via Lightbridge 2 to a tablet or smartphone running DJI GO, enabling waypoint missions, point-of-interest orbits, and course/home lock intelligent flight modes.
What does the black box record?
Eight gigabytes of onboard flash memory continuously log all flight parameters — GPS position, barometric altitude, IMU raw data, motor speeds, battery voltage and current, control stick inputs, and system messages — at full sensor update rates. After an incident or anomaly, the log file is downloaded via USB to DJI Assistant 2 for playback and analysis. The recording is automatic and cannot be disabled by the operator, ensuring that every flight is documented for incident investigation and maintenance trending.
