The EPH-LW series from Kanetec is the dedicated controller for EPT-LW series permanent electromagnetic chucks — used in precision grinding, milling, and electrical discharge machining (EDM) where secure workpiece holding with the ability to make fine position adjustments is critical. Unlike conventional electromagnetic chuck controllers that only provide full magnetisation and full demagnetisation, the EPH-LW adds a low magnetic force mode.

How does low magnetic force control work?

The EPH-LW continuously applies a reduced voltage to the electromagnetic chuck, maintaining a weak but sufficient holding force. This allows the operator to tap or nudge the workpiece into precise alignment without fully releasing the magnetic grip — eliminating the need to re-indicate position after each adjustment. Once alignment is confirmed, the controller switches to full holding voltage for machining. After machining is complete, a reverse-current demagnetization cycle neutralises residual magnetism in both the chuck and the workpiece, preventing chips from clinging to finished surfaces and ensuring the workpiece can be removed without resistance. This three-stage sequence — low force for positioning, full force for machining, reverse current for release — is particularly valuable for thin-walled or easily deformed workpieces that would shift unpredictably under a sudden full-release demagnetization.
