Five meters of RS232—when is this the right choice?

When both devices are physically close—same enclosure, or the PLC cabinet and an adjacent operator panel. At five meters and any standard baud rate up to 19.2 kbps, RS232 signal integrity is not a concern—this is well within the electrical margin. The reason to choose the 5-meter over the 10-meter is purely mechanical: five meters routes cleanly through one cabinet's wire duct and terminates at the partner device without leaving three or four meters of coiled excess.
