Product Description
The CSM UNICOM3 is an industrial in-system flash programmer designed for automated production-line firmware download to ECUs, controllers, and embedded modules. It communicates over CAN/CAN FD, RS-232, RS-485, K-Line, and LIN — covering the dominant in-vehicle and industrial control buses — and stores firmware images on internal flash memory for standalone, PC-free operation at the programming station.
How does the UNICOM3 program a target device?
The programmer runs CSM's ucbase real-time operating system. Application-specific programming sequences are delivered as .smod software modules — developed by CSM or the user — that implement the target controller's specific bootloader protocol. A typical programming cycle: the UNICOM3 sends a start address, data length, and binary payload over the selected bus; the target bootloader acknowledges and writes each block. This architecture supports any controller with a CAN, LIN, K-Line, or serial bootloader without hardware changes to the programmer.
What interfaces does the UNICOM3 provide?
All UNICOM3 variants include CAN/CAN FD, RS-232, RS-485, K-Line, and LIN as standard, plus 8 general-purpose GPIO lines and a LAN port for PC configuration. The UNICOM3 ETH FLEXRAY variant adds 100Base-TX Ethernet and FlexRay. The base UNICOM3 uses CAN for host-PC data transfer; the ETH variant adds TCP/IP connectivity. VIO1 (pin 13) and VLV_OUT (pin 27) provide programmable voltage outputs for target device power or signalling.
How is the UNICOM3 integrated into a production line?
Firmware images and .smod modules are loaded onto the internal flash storage (2 GB on the classic model, 64 GB on current variants) via LAN from a central server or engineering workstation. Once loaded, the UNICOM3 runs autonomously — triggered by a GPIO edge, a serial command, or a network message — so no operator PC is needed at the programming station. The 8 GPIO lines can signal pass/fail status, start the next cycle, or interface with a PLC-controlled fixture.
