Product Description

DMS (Drilling Mate System) 4.0 is Soilmec's fourth-generation machine control platform that transforms a hydraulic piling rig from a manually operated piece of heavy equipment into a semi-autonomous, data-networked foundation construction tool. The system integrates three tiers: ON BOARD (in-cab real-time control and operator guidance), PC (offline data analysis and reporting), and MANAGER (cloud-based fleet telematics). This architecture mirrors the hierarchy of modern manufacturing — machine-level automation, engineering workstation analysis, and enterprise-level fleet management — applied to construction equipment where each rig is a mobile factory producing foundation elements to strict quality documentation requirements.

How does automated CFA drilling improve pile quality and consistency?

Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piling requires the operator to manage penetration rate, rotary speed, and crowd force simultaneously while monitoring torque to prevent auger "corkscrewing" — where the auger flights become packed with soil and rotate as a solid plug without cutting, destroying the pile's side friction capacity. DMS Auto CFA automates this multi-variable control: the operator sets the target depth and the system manages penetration rate, rotary speed, and crowd force based on real-time torque feedback. When torque spikes — indicating corkscrewing — the system automatically increases penetration rate and reduces rotary speed to restore cutting. During the concrete phase, DMS controls auger extraction speed and concrete pump stroke rate to maintain positive concrete head pressure, preventing necking or soil collapse into the wet concrete column — the most common cause of CFA pile defects. Every parameter — depth, torque, crowd force, concrete volume, and concrete pressure — is logged per 10 cm of pile depth and compiled into a QA/QC report that meets the documentation standards of EN 1536 and DFI/PDCA specifications.

What does DMS MANAGER 4.0 provide for fleet operators?

DMS MANAGER 4.0 is a cloud-based telematics platform powered by PTC Thingworx IoT, receiving real-time data from every DMS-equipped rig via MQTT protocol over 4G cellular (with 5G planned), Wi-Fi, satellite, or radio. A fleet manager in the head office sees: real-time GPS location of every rig, current drilling status (drilling/concreting/idle/transport), daily production (linear meters of pile completed), fuel consumption per pile and per day, upcoming maintenance intervals based on actual operating hours, and real-time alarm notifications (low concrete hopper level, hydraulic over-temperature, engine fault codes). The 24/7 DMS Control Centres in Cesena, Italy and North America can remotely access any connected rig for diagnostics — reading fault codes, checking sensor calibration, or guiding the operator through a procedure — reducing the need to fly a service engineer to a remote jobsite for what turns out to be a sensor connection issue.

How does the anti-slack rope system protect equipment?

In Kelly-bar drilling, if the operator lowers the kelly bar faster than the tool advances into the ground — or if the tool suddenly drops through a void or soft layer — the hoist rope goes slack. When the rope re-tensions, the shock load can snap the rope or damage the mast structure. The DMS anti-slack system monitors the relationship between main winch speed and kelly bar descent rate; if it detects incipient slack, it automatically reduces winch payout speed to maintain rope tension. This is particularly important in deep LDP drilling (up to 69.7 m on the SR-45 Advanced) where the operator cannot see the tool tip and must rely on instrument feedback to prevent rope damage.
