Product Description
The FlowSwitch FS 510 from Mütec Instruments is a highly reliable, microwave-based flow monitor designed for continuous flow/no-flow detection of bulk solids, including powders, dust, pellets, and granules. Its non-contact measurement principle, based on the Doppler effect, ensures long-lasting, maintenance-free operation even in challenging environments where dust, steam, or material build-up would hinder conventional sensors.
Operating Principle
The FS 510 emits a microwave field from its sensor tip. When solid particles move through this field (e.g., falling through a pipe or moving along a conveyor belt), the microwaves are reflected back. The device detects the resulting frequency shift (Doppler effect) and triggers a switching signal, indicating material flow. The absence of a signal indicates a no-flow condition, such as a blockage or empty pipe. The sensor can measure through plastic, glass, and all non-conductive materials, and its operation is unaffected by dust or material deposits on the sensor face.
Key Features
- Non-Contact & Maintenance-Free: The sensor does not touch the material, eliminating wear and minimizing maintenance requirements.
- Adjustable Parameters: Sensitivity (gain), filter time, hysteresis, and signal delay are fully adjustable via potentiometers on the device, allowing fine-tuning for specific materials and conveying speeds.
- Robust Construction: Housed in stainless steel (1.4307) with a PTFE (Teflon) sensor tip (ceramic optional), the FS 510 is built for rugged industrial environments.
- Flexible Output: Provides a potential-free relay contact (SPDT) for direct integration into control systems, plus a separate "ready-to-operate" contact for status monitoring.
- Hazardous Area Use: Available in an ATEX-certified version for use in dust explosion hazardous areas up to Zone 20/21, significantly expanding its application range.
- Easy Installation & Retrofit: The compact sensor can be easily installed in pipes, on conveyor belts, chutes, drop plates, or behind screws using a simple weld-on nozzle.

Applications
The FS 510 is widely used across industries for monitoring material flow and preventing process interruptions. Typical applications include:
- Detecting blockages or empty conditions in pneumatic conveying lines.
- Monitoring material feed on conveyor belts, vibratory feeders, and screw conveyors.
- Protecting downstream equipment (e.g., mills, crushers, packaging machines) from material loss or jams.
- Ensuring consistent flow in food, pharmaceutical, chemical, plastic, recycling, cement, and power generation industries.
- Providing flow/no-flow status in ATEX-rated environments (dust explosion protection).
Product Variants
The FlowSwitch FS 510 (with relay output) is part of a broader product family. For applications requiring trend analysis or continuous measurement, the FS 550 variant provides an analog output (0/4-20 mA) proportional to the flow intensity. Both versions are available in standard and ATEX-rated models.
