Product Description
The IC830M series is Emerson's PACMotion synchronous AC servo motor family — a range of 10-pole permanent magnet motors spanning six frame sizes (58 mm to 188 mm flange) and power ratings from approximately 0.2 kW to 8.6 kW. All models feature low-cogging rotor design for smooth torque delivery at low speeds, making them suitable for applications where surface finish, path accuracy, or positional stability depend on torque quality: CNC machining, robotic manipulation, electronic assembly, and precision web handling.
Frame size and winding selection
The IC830M family offers six frame sizes (2 through 7), each with multiple stack lengths and winding variants. Longer stacks increase torque and inertia; different winding codes within the same frame trade speed for torque — a "K" winding delivers higher torque at lower speed, while a "Q" winding reaches higher maximum speed at reduced torque. Within Frame 7 (188 mm flange), the largest in the family, rated power spans 4.58 kW (72L, 1800 rpm) through 8.58 kW (74Q, 3000 rpm), with peak torques up to 141 Nm. Frame 2 (58 mm) models start at fractional-horsepower levels for compact instrument-grade axes. For a given mechanical load, selecting the right frame size and winding is a balance of inertia matching (motor inertia should be within 1:1 to 10:1 of reflected load inertia for stable control), thermal margin (standstill torque at the expected ambient), and speed requirement (the winding must reach the application's maximum traverse speed at the available DC bus voltage).
Encoder and connectivity variants
Three encoder technologies are available, each selected by the feedback option code in the part number. BiSS (AB suffix) provides multi-turn absolute position at ±0.6 arc-minute accuracy over a dual-cable connection — one power cable, one encoder cable. SFD3 (CA suffix, Smart Feedback Device) combines power and absolute feedback on a single cable, reducing cable count and cabinet wiring volume — popular for robotic joints where cable management is a design constraint. HIPERFACE DSL (GF suffix) also runs on a single cable and provides multi-turn absolute position with ±1.33 arc-minute accuracy plus an electronic type plate that the drive reads on connection for automatic motor parameter configuration — eliminating manual nameplate data entry during commissioning. All three encoder types deliver 1,000,000 counts per revolution position resolution. Motors integrate with PACMotion IC830DP-series drives over EtherCAT, with the RX3i PMM345 motion controller coordinating up to 50 total axes (40 physical + 10 virtual) per system.
