Product Description
The HP Jet Fusion 1200 is the entry point to HP's Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) platform — an industrial powder-bed fusion technology repackaged into a compact, sub-$60,000 system that runs on standard wall power. It addresses a gap in the polymer AM market: between desktop FFF printers that cannot match the mechanical isotropy and surface quality of powder-bed parts, and full-scale industrial SLS/MJF systems whose six-figure price tags and facility requirements (three-phase power, inert gas supply, dedicated compressed air) lock them into dedicated production environments. The 1200 delivers genuine MJF part quality — watertight, isotropic in Z, with a smooth matte surface finish — on a 12-liter build bed that completes in under 12 hours, independent of how densely the build is packed.
How does Multi Jet Fusion differ from selective laser sintering for nylon parts?
Both MJF and SLS are powder-bed fusion processes for thermoplastics, but the energy delivery mechanism is fundamentally different. SLS scans a laser point-by-point across each layer, fusing powder where the beam strikes. Build time scales with the cross-sectional area of the parts — more parts, more scanning, more time. MJF deposits two liquid agents across the entire powder bed in a single pass: a fusing agent (absorbs infrared energy) printed where the part cross-section should solidify, and a detailing agent (inhibits fusion) printed at part boundaries to define sharp edges. An infrared lamp then passes over the entire bed; the fusing-agent regions absorb energy and melt, while the rest of the powder remains loose. Because the IR pass is area-wide rather than point-sequential, build time depends on layer count — Z-height — not packing density. A full 12-liter build takes the same ~12 hours whether it contains one part or fifty. The resulting parts are genuinely isotropic: tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus are statistically indistinguishable in X, Y, and Z, which is not true of FFF parts and is only approximated by SLS.
What does the sub-$60K system include?
HP bundles the printer, an unpacking station with vibration cleaning and automatic powder recovery, and Magics Print for HP (Materialise-powered nesting and build-layout software) at the system price. The Natural Cooling Unit — a separate cart that holds the completed build while it cools — is the operational detail that makes the 1200 viable for non-dedicated environments: after a print finishes, the build unit transfers to the cooling cart rather than occupying the printer for the 4-6 hours a hot powder cake needs to reach handling temperature. The printer is free to start the next job immediately. Reusable powder is automatically recovered, mixed with fresh powder at the target ratio (up to 80% reused), and returned to the feed hopper. An annual service contract at roughly 10% of system cost covers maintenance and next-day replacement parts. HP lists full commercial availability for early 2027.
What are the part quality and material characteristics?
At launch the 1200 runs HP 3D HR PA 12 — a nylon 12 grade qualified across the entire Jet Fusion portfolio. Parts exhibit tensile strength of ~48 MPa (XY and Z), elongation at break of ~20%, and a matte grey surface finish that requires no vapour smoothing for most functional applications. The process produces fully watertight parts without sealant post-processing, which matters for fluid-handling components, vacuum jigs, and end-use covers and housings. Dimensional accuracy is specified at ±0.3 mm for features under 100 mm, scaling linearly with feature size. HP has indicated additional materials will be qualified after launch, following the material roadmap established on the larger 5200/5600 series (TPU, PP, and flame-retardant grades are candidates).
