The BLH Nobel G5 is a single-channel process weighing instrument built for speed — 300 weight updates per second with 24-bit A/D resolution, which matters when you are controlling a filling valve that needs to close within a few milliseconds of hitting target weight. It is available in two form factors: the G5-PM with a 4.3-inch colour TFT display and 31-key keypad for panel mounting, and the G5-RM as a headless DIN-rail transmitter configured entirely through a built-in web server — no display, no keypad, just an Ethernet port and a browser. Both versions share the same measurement engine, I/O, and fieldbus options.
What fieldbus and communication options does the G5 support?
Modbus TCP (Ethernet) and Modbus RTU (RS-485/422) are standard on every unit. An optional fieldbus slot accepts plug-in modules for PROFIBUS-DP (up to 12 Mbps, auto-baud), EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, and ControlNet. The PLC data mapping is straightforward: 16 bytes from PLC to G5 for commands and setpoints, 80 bytes from G5 to PLC for weight values, status flags, and diagnostic data. The built-in web server provides full setup, calibration, and real-time weight monitoring from any browser — no software to install. This means a technician can calibrate a G5-RM mounted in a remote cabinet from a tablet over WiFi without opening the enclosure.
What advanced functions go beyond simple weight display?
Four level supervision functions and four setpoint control functions run independently of the PLC — the G5 can directly trigger filling valves, diverter gates, or alarm beacons based on configurable weight thresholds without waiting for a PLC scan cycle. The flow rate calculation function (firmware v1.3.0+) computes mass flow from the weight derivative, useful for loss-in-weight feeder monitoring. Excitation supervision detects broken or shorted load cell cables and flags a diagnostic alarm. Configuration backup and restore via USB, SD card, or internal memory speeds up device replacement — swap the hardware, restore the backup, and the replacement is identical to the original without re-calibration.
