Product Description
Tool and mold makers using 0.5mm ball end mills on 63HRC steel face a simple problem: 15,000 rpm is not fast enough. The tool breaks from insufficient surface speed. Saphir runs at 80,000 rpm, bringing surface speed back into the cutting range for small-diameter tools. Fine details are milled directly – no EDM electrodes, no grinding passes, no hand polishing.
What does 80,000 rpm actually enable?
A 0.5mm ball end mill needs 80,000 rpm to achieve the same surface speed as a 10mm end mill at 4,000 rpm. Below that, the tool rubs instead of cuts – heat builds, the edge chips, and the tool breaks. Saphir delivers the speed that keeps small tools alive. The result is fine detail directly off the machine, eliminating electrode manufacturing and EDM.
Why mineral cast instead of all steel?
Steel machines transmit vibration from the cut into the structure, causing chatter marks on the workpiece. Small tools are especially sensitive to vibration. Saphir uses a mineral cast bed with an FEM-optimized steel frame embedded in it. The mineral cast absorbs vibration like a damping compound; the steel frame provides rigidity. This combination reduces chatter by 80% compared to all-steel machines, allowing small tools to run at full speed without breaking.
3-axis S3 or 4-axis S4 – what is the real difference?
S3 mills electrodes, stamps and flat molds – 90% of tool and die work. S4 adds a 4th-axis rotary table with tailstock, enabling full contouring of long round parts: rolls, cores, pins, cylindrical inserts. If your shop never makes round parts, S3 is sufficient. If you do, S4 replaces a 3-axis machine plus a separate indexing head.
