The Solartron Metrology EtherNet/IP™ Protocol Interface Module (PIM) is a dedicated communication gateway designed to seamlessly connect Rockwell Automation PLCs and other EtherNet/IP™ enabled controllers to Solartron's flexible Orbit® 3 digital measurement network. This module simplifies the integration of high-precision LVDT displacement sensors, rotary encoders, temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and discrete I/O into industrial control systems.

Key Features & Certifications

The PIM is ODVA conformance tested, ensuring reliable interoperability with EtherNet/IP™ networks. It supports both Explicit and Cyclic messaging, enabling flexible data exchange for parameter configuration and synchronized real-time readings. The EtherNet/IP™ protocol driver operates in server mode, allowing the module to accept commands from a PLC master.

Connectivity & Sensor Integration

The module features one EtherNet/IP™ port and one Orbit® 3 port. It can power up to ten LVDT displacement sensors or other Orbit modules directly. For larger systems, the sensor count can be expanded to a maximum of 150 units using supplementary power modules. The PIM is compatible with Solartron's entire range of digital sensors, including contact and non-contact linear measurement sensors, as well as third-party sensors via the Analog Interface Module (AIM).

Configuration & Operation

Setup is facilitated through free configuration software, accessible via the module's MicroUSB port. Parameters such as IP address, subnet mask, and gateway can be configured for network integration. Once configured, data can be read using a Solartron readout, the Gauge Computer Software, or directly by a PLC using the EtherNet/IP™ protocol.

Applications

This module is widely deployed in manufacturing, automation and control, power generation, and food processing industries. Typical use cases include inline flatness checks, dimensional measurement, quality control, and process monitoring where precise, repeatable measurements are critical.
