2-jaw vs. 4-jaw in the CHS Series — how to choose?

The 2-jaw CHS clamps workpieces across two opposing faces, leaving the sides open for tool access — ideal when the machining operation requires clearance around the part perimeter. The 4-jaw CHS distributes clamping force across four contact points, providing more even pressure distribution and better centering for round or near-round workpieces. For square or rectangular cross-sections, the 2-jaw configuration avoids the distortion that can occur when a 4-jaw chuck attempts to grip an imperfectly parallel surface. Both variants share identical body dimensions, clamping force ratings, speed limits, and mounting interfaces within a given size — the jaw count is the sole configurational difference.

Which size fits my application?

The CHS Series 2-jaw is available in five outer-diameter sizes: 169 mm (7 in), 210 mm (8 in), 254 mm (10 in), 305 mm (12 in), and 381 mm (15 in). Clamping force scales from approximately 38 kN at the smallest size to 120 kN at the largest. Maximum spindle speed ranges from 2,500 rpm (381 mm) to 6,000 rpm (169 mm). What is included with the chuck?

Each CHS Series 2-jaw chuck ships as a complete kit: the chuck body with mounting bolts, one set of soft top jaws (machinable for custom workpiece profiles), one set of hard top jaws (for general-purpose gripping), T-nuts with retaining bolts, the chuck mounting key, and an unhandled lantern spindle nut. No additional jaw sets or mounting hardware need to be ordered separately for initial setup.
