Product Description

The RTK DA149 is an intrinsically safe (IS) relay designed to provide a safe and reliable interface for control signals between hazardous areas and safe areas in industrial process plants. Unlike standard relays or functional safety relays (which protect personnel and machinery), the DA149 is specifically engineered to limit electrical energy to levels that cannot cause ignition in explosive atmospheres. This makes it an essential component for signal transmission in environments where flammable gases, vapors, or dusts are present, such as chemical plants, oil refineries, pharmaceutical facilities, and grain silos.

The core of the DA149's value lies in its "Simple Apparatus" certification for both inputs and outputs. In the context of intrinsic safety, this is a significant engineering advantage. It means that the relay's internal energy storage is so low that it can be included in any intrinsically safe loop without requiring the entire system to undergo complex and costly certification (often referred to as a "System Drawings" or "IS System Assessment"). This dramatically simplifies project engineering, reduces time to deployment, and provides flexibility in system design. Furthermore, the relay's negligible power consumption allows it to be loop-powered directly from the connected signal, eliminating the need for a separate power supply and simplifying field wiring.

The DA149 is a member of a family of four devices, two of which are designed to be mounted in the safe area, and two that are certified for direct mounting within the hazardous area itself. All versions are housed in slim, universal DIN rail mountable enclosures, saving valuable cabinet space. The relays feature galvanic isolation between input and output, enhancing signal integrity and eliminating the need for a ground connection. The output is a standard electromechanical relay contact, providing a volt-free signal suitable for interfacing with a wide range of control system inputs, including DCS and PLC I/O modules.

While the DA149 has been discontinued and is now a legacy product from RTK Instruments (now part of Eaton MTL), understanding its function and specifications remains crucial for maintaining existing installations and designing equivalent replacement systems. It serves as a classic example of a simple, robust, and highly effective IS interface device, widely used for transmitting digital signals from sensors, switches, and alarm contacts in hazardous zones back to central control rooms. For new designs, equivalent modern IS isolators from Eaton MTL or other manufacturers should be considered.
