Product Description
The MC-Max Excavator is Topcon's high-end machine control platform that transforms an excavator into a survey-grade grading instrument. Unlike simpler 2D laser systems that only indicate depth below a horizontal reference plane, the MC-Max in 3D Automatic mode compares the real-time GNSS position of the bucket cutting edge against a digital 3D terrain model and automatically controls boom height and bucket angle to follow design surfaces — the operator simply pulls the stick and the system keeps the cutting edge on grade. For urban job sites, tunnels, underground parking, or areas where GNSS signals are obstructed, the system seamlessly switches to robotic total station (LPS) positioning without changing the operator interface or control behavior.
How does the "Working Window" and auto-latching function?
The operator defines a distance above the design grade — the "working window." When the bucket tip enters this window during a grading pass, the system automatically "latches" and takes over boom and bucket control. This means the operator can dig a rough trench with the system in indicate-only mode, then switch to automatic when approaching final grade without any mode change — the system recognizes the bucket is within the working window and engages automatic control. This hybrid approach is faster than switching modes manually and safer than having the system fight the operator during bulk excavation.
How does MC-Max compare to Leica's iCON iXE2?
Both are excavator machine control systems, but they target different tiers. The MC-Max is a full 3D automatic platform (supporting GNSS and LPS with automatic bucket control), while the iCON iXE2 is a 2D system with a defined 3D upgrade path. The MC-Max includes 3D automatic capability in its architecture; the iXE2 requires an additional MCP80 panel and GNSS receivers to reach 3D. The MC-Max's multi-positioning strategy — GNSS for open sites, LPS for obstructed — is a distinctive advantage for contractors who work across both greenfield and urban environments. Both support tilt rotator integration, automatic bucket angle control, and cloud-based as-built mapping (SiteLink3D for Topcon, ConX for Leica).
What does the MC-X platform architecture provide?
MC-X is Topcon's common hardware and software platform shared across the MC-Max excavator, dozer, and grader systems. This means: (a) components are interchangeable — a GNSS receiver from a dozer can be moved to an excavator; (b) the operator interface is consistent across machine types, reducing training when an operator moves between machines; (c) the modular architecture allows a contractor to start with 2D guidance and add sensors, receivers, and software unlocks to reach full 3D automatic without replacing core components. The system includes custom fingertip buttons on the joysticks for instant engagement of automatic functions without taking hands off the controls.
