Product Description
The Rotork Schischek ExBin-N is an explosion-proof speed monitoring module designed for belt-driven fans and rotating equipment in hazardous areas. It detects belt slippage or breakage by monitoring rotational speed via a Namur sensor (DIN 19234) and provides a potential-free switching output to the building management system or PLC. The ExBin-N is certified for ATEX Zone 1 and 2 (gas) and Zone 21 and 22 (dust), with IECEx and EAC approvals. A backlit matrix LCD and three-button menu allow complete on-site configuration without tools or software.
How does the integrated Ex-e junction box simplify installation?
Conventional explosion-proof speed monitoring often requires a separate intrinsically safe (Ex-i) isolation module between the hazardous-area sensor and the safe-area controller. The ExBin-N eliminates this by incorporating an Ex-e certified junction box directly into the housing. The Namur sensor connects to intrinsically safe terminals inside the ExBin-N enclosure, and the unit handles all signal conditioning and galvanic isolation internally — providing 1.5 kV isolation between the supply and contact output. Only standard Ex-e cable glands (M16 × 1.5 mm) are needed for installation, significantly reducing wiring complexity, panel space, and component count compared to conventional Ex-i barrier-based solutions.
What monitoring parameters can be configured on-site?
| Parameter | Setting Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Speed Threshold | 50–10,000 min⁻¹ | Application-dependent |
| Hysteresis | 25–1,000 min⁻¹ | 50 min⁻¹ |
| Start-Up Bypass (AUB) | 3–240 s | 120 s |
| Start Delay | Fixed | 5 s |
| Response Time (T₉₀) | Fixed | ~16 s |
| Contact Mode | Break or Make | Application-dependent |
All parameters are set via the front-panel menu display and protected by a user-configurable password lock. The start-up bypass timer (AUB) is particularly critical for belt-driven fans: it suppresses the alarm output during motor ramp-up, preventing nuisance trips while the driven equipment reaches its nominal speed. The 16-second response time provides a deliberate filtering window that avoids false positives from momentary speed fluctuations while still reacting quickly enough to protect the mechanical system.
Which hazardous area certifications apply?
The ExBin-N holds EC-Type Examination Certificate EPS 14 ATEX 1 657 and IECEx Certificate IECEx EPS 14.0074. Gas certification is II 2 (1) G Ex e mb [ia Ga] IIC T6 Gb, and dust certification is II 2 (1) D Ex tb [ia Da] IIIC T80 °C Db IP66. The unit is also EAC certified (TC RU C-DE.F508.B.01510). Variants for less demanding environments include the RedBin-N (Zone 2/22 only) and InBin-N (safe/industrial areas). An optional marine/offshore coating and stainless steel housing are available for corrosive atmospheres.
