Product Description
The PXIe-6614 is NI's highest-performance counter/timer module for the PXI Express platform, designed for applications that require precision timing, frequency measurement, or pulse generation across multiple channels simultaneously. The eight independent 32-bit counter/timer channels each have their own dedicated scatter-gather DMA controller, ensuring that high-speed data streaming from all channels does not contend for bus bandwidth — critical in multi-channel engine test cells, semiconductor ATE, or aerospace telemetry validation where counters run continuously at high rates.
What does the OCXO timebase provide over a standard TCXO?
The oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) places the reference crystal inside a miniature temperature-stabilized oven, maintaining it at a constant temperature regardless of ambient thermal changes. This delivers ±75 ppb frequency accuracy (temperature + 1-year drift combined) versus ±50 ppm for a typical uncompensated crystal — a 600,000× improvement. Short-term stability of ±0.5 ppb/day after 30 days of continuous operation means that a 100 MHz measurement drifts by less than 0.05 Hz per day. For applications that require locking to an external frequency standard, the on-board PLL accepts 10, 20, or 100 MHz references from PXIe_DSTAR, PXI_STAR, PXIe_CLK100, PXI_TRIG, or any PFI line.
When is the 8× prescale mode needed?
In standard edge counting mode, the maximum source frequency is 25 MHz (limited by the minimum 20 ns pulse width on PFI lines). The 2× prescale extends this to 50 MHz, and the 8× prescale to 80 MHz on standard PFI lines — or 100 MHz via the PXIe-DSTAR backplane trigger. The trade-off is that prescale divides the count before it reaches the counter, so at 8× prescale the counter increments once every 8 input edges, reducing resolution by a factor of 8. This is acceptable for totalizing applications where absolute count matters but edge-level timing does not — for example, counting pulses from a high-speed flow meter where the total volume is the measurement of interest, not the individual pulse timing.
How does the 40-line digital I/O complement the counter/timer channels?
Beyond the eight counter/timers, the PXIe-6614 provides 40 individually programmable PFI (Programmable Function Interface) lines. Each line can be independently configured as input or output. When used as digital outputs, a 2,047-sample waveform generation FIFO supports hardware-timed pattern generation up to 10 MHz. As inputs, a 255-sample acquisition FIFO captures digital patterns at sample clocks up to 10 MHz. These PFI lines serve dual roles: they can function as general-purpose DIO, or they can be routed as counter/timer gate, source, aux, or output lines — enabling complex multi-counter synchronization without external wiring. For PWM applications, the module generates pulse trains with dynamic duty cycle and frequency updates, and measures pulse width down to 20 ns (6.25 ns via DSTAR).
