How does burst-fire control differ from phase-angle firing?

The S1-1.5DR switches loads only in multiples of complete mains half-cycles — known as burst-fire or cycle-stealing control. Unlike phase-angle firing, which chops each half-cycle and generates harmonic distortion, burst-fire control maintains a clean sinusoidal current waveform. The cycle time varies from 0.4 seconds at 50% output to 1 second at 0% and 100% output, providing near-infinite resolution through variable-frequency PWM while maintaining unity power factor. This makes it ideal for electric furnaces and HVAC heater batteries where electromagnetic compatibility is important and the thermal time constant of the load smooths the burst nature.

What does self-powered operation mean for installation?

The S1-1.5DR draws its control power directly from the 230 VAC mains input — no separate control voltage supply is required. The unit accepts a standard 0–10 VDC analogue signal (47 kΩ input impedance) with 2500 V galvanic isolation between the control input and power circuit. This simplifies wiring to a single mains connection plus two signal wires. The controller operates from -10°C to +40°C ambient with a 20% derating at 50°C, cooling by natural air convection. External fuse protection is required as no internal fuse is provided.
