Product Description
The R-net is a modular, CAN-based electronic control platform from PG Drives Technology — a Curtiss-Wright company — that serves as the central nervous system of modern powered rehabilitation wheelchairs. Unlike a single-box motor controller that forces the wheelchair builder to work within fixed I/O limits, the R-net is a distributed system of up to 15 individually addressable modules communicating over a proprietary CAN protocol optimized for the latency and determinism requirements of human-machine wheelchair control. Power modules (PM90, PM120, PM2), joystick modules (JSM, CJSM2), seating/lighting modules (ISM-6, ISM-8, STLM), and specialty modules (gyro stabilizer, encoder, Omni2 display, I/O expander) connect and auto-configure via the "Connect & Go" architecture — reducing custom wheelchair wiring from a bespoke harness design exercise to a plug-and-play cable assembly.
How does the PM2-C connected power module extend the R-net platform?
The PM2-C represents the connected generation: integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with support for up to 8 simultaneous Bluetooth pairings, 6 independent data logs recording drive parameters and usage patterns, a real-time clock for time-stamped diagnostics, and a Smart Fuse that replaces physical fuses with firmware-configurable electronic overcurrent protection. The module interfaces with Li-ion battery BMS for state-of-charge and state-of-health monitoring, and communicates with the cloud-based My Powerchair app — enabling remote diagnostics, usage tracking, and firmware updates without returning the wheelchair to the service center. Charge current measurement differentiates between drive and charge energy, supporting accurate range prediction.
What safety architecture does the R-net employ?
The R-net is TÜV-certified to ISO 7176-14:2022 (the powered wheelchair safety standard) and supports both FDA 510(k) clearance and EU MDR CE-marking documentation packages for wheelchair OEMs. The gyro module provides closed-loop stabilization, automatically correcting for camber-induced drift and cross-slope steering pull — safety-critical on high-center-of-gravity rehab chairs. The attendant module enables a caregiver to override the user joystick and take manual control. Safety interlocks between the ISM seating modules and the drive system restrict seat elevation, tilt, and recline movement while the wheelchair is driving, preventing the center-of-gravity shifts that could cause tip-over during motion. Up to 8 independent drive profiles — each with separately tuned acceleration, deceleration, top speed, and steering sensitivity — allow the same wheelchair to be safely operated in confined indoor spaces and open outdoor environments.
