The Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories SEL-2240 Axion is a fully integrated, modular input/output (I/O) and control solution that combines the communications, built-in security, and IEC 61131 logic engine of the SEL Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) family with a durable suite of I/O modules that provide high-speed, deterministic control performance over an EtherCAT network. Whether your application requires a remote terminal unit (RTU) or an ultra-rugged programmable logic controller (PLC), the SEL-2240 Axion is an excellent choice.

- Modular I/O Expansion: Each Axion node can accommodate up to 10 modules, including a processor module, one or two power supplies, and a user-determined mix of I/O modules. A single system can support up to 60 modules or 6 nodes, each with its own RTAC module. Maximum I/O points: 1,286 digital inputs, 864 digital outputs, 8 high-speed digital outputs, 256 DC analog inputs, 128 DC analog outputs, 64 AC current inputs, and 64 AC voltage inputs.
- Flexible CPU Options: The Axion platform can be powered by various RTAC modules, including the SEL-2241 RTAC module, SEL-3530, SEL-3530-4, and SEL-3555 RTACs. These processors seamlessly interface with I/O modules and provide easy integration with other serial and Ethernet devices via preinstalled communication protocols. The RTACs also support multiple SCADA/HMI channels.
- High-Performance Communication: The Axion utilizes the EtherCAT fieldbus for high-speed, deterministic control performance. - Rugged Design for Harsh Environments: All SEL Axion modules are rated from –40° to +85°C and can optionally include conformal coating. The system is designed to withstand vibration, electrical surges, fast transients, and extreme temperatures, meeting or exceeding IEEE 1613 standards.
- IEC 61131-3 Logic Engine: The Axion features a complete IEC 61131 logic engine, supporting structured text, ladder logic, and continuous function chart programming languages. Engineers can run custom control logic at two different rates (as fast as 4 ms for critical control loops).
- Integrated Cybersecurity: The Axion includes exe-GUARD whitelist antivirus technology, LDAP user authentication, and NERC/CIP compliance features. It also enforces corporate logging and port control policies to maintain security perimeter integrity.
- Simple Setup with Free Software: The ACSELERATOR RTAC SEL-5033 configuration software is included at no additional cost. It provides everything needed to set up I/O, communications, security, and programmable logic in one easy-to-use package, with standard device templates for quick system building.
- Integrated Web-Based HMI: The SEL-2241 RTAC module includes an embedded web server with a flexible graphical HMI system, allowing custom displays to be built quickly without mapping data tags. No special software is needed for viewing HMI displays.
- Synchronized Current and Voltage Measurements: The Axion CT/PT module provides high-accuracy current and voltage measurements with synchronized sampling. Multiple CT/PT modules sample all measurements simultaneously, enabling time-deterministic control applications such as load shedding, microgrid control, and autosynchronization.
