The Advantech AMAX-5580 is a compact, fanless programmable automation controller (PAC) designed for edge computing and real-time machine control. Powered by 6th generation Intel Core i7/i5/Celeron processors, it delivers high-performance computing in a DIN-rail form factor, making it ideal for space-constrained industrial control cabinets.

Real-Time Control & EtherCAT Master

The AMAX-5580 features optimized BIOS and embedded OS for 1ms real-time control under Windows and Linux, achieving up to 64-axis motion control with EtherCAT cycle times as low as 1ms. It serves as an EtherCAT master for AMAX-5000 series slice I/O modules, providing unlimited I/O points and flexible fieldbus networks. Independent resources on the Intel i210 GbE controller ensure superior EtherCAT performance, while upstream LAN redundancy (Intel Teaming Function) and downstream EtherCAT cable redundancy enhance system reliability.

Open Platform & Software Support

The controller supports CODESYS RTE V3 (IEC 61131-3), offering all five programming languages (IL, ST, FBD, LD, SFC) with SoftMotion, CNC, and Robotics extension packages. CODESYS Visualization (Target and Web) is also supported. IT connectivity is enabled through OPC UA, Modbus TCP/RTU, and MQTT, while OT connectivity includes EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, CANopen, and Modbus. The Advantech Data Connect (ADC) Library provides flexible data exchange with third-party applications via PLC Handler (symbols) and shared memory (C++/C#).

Flexible Expansion & Connectivity

The AMAX-5580 supports up to 4 left-side expansion modules (AMAX-54XX series) for additional communication interfaces, and right-side connection to AMAX-5000 series EtherCAT slice I/O modules. A full-size mPCIe slot supports wireless modules for 3G/4G/LTE, WiFi, and GPS. Built-in I/O includes 2x GbE LAN, 4x USB 3.0, 2x RS-232/422/485, VGA, and HDMI.

Rugged Design & Wide Operating Temperature

The fanless aluminum housing with passive cooling ensures maintenance-free operation. The system operates reliably from -10°C to 60°C (with 0.7m/s airflow) and withstands shock (10G, IEC 60068-2-27) and vibration (1 Grms, IEC 60068-2-64). Dual 24V DC power inputs with alarm output provide power redundancy for critical applications. The controller complies with CE, FCC, and UL certifications.
