Product Description
The B&R X20 series is a slice-based control and I/O system that redefines flexibility in industrial automation. It uniquely combines the mechanical robustness of a traditional rack system with the granular modularity of an I/O slice system. The heart of this architecture is the X2X Link backplane, which enables seamless communication between the controller and I/O modules—whether they are mounted side-by-side on a DIN rail, distributed within the same cabinet, or located up to 100 meters away. This design philosophy allows system integrators to build precisely the control solution they need, from a standalone compact controller to a sprawling distributed I/O network, all while minimizing wiring complexity and maximizing component density.

Performance is a cornerstone of the X20 platform. The system offers a wide range of CPU options, spanning from cost-effective ARM Cortex-A9 processors (up to 667 MHz) to high-performance x86 processors, ensuring an optimal fit for any application. Storage is equally scalable, with onboard flash drives supporting up to 4 GB of application and data storage. A standout feature is the patented reACTION technology, which enables the integrated I/O channels to achieve response times as low as 1 microsecond. This is accomplished through dedicated function blocks within the Automation Studio environment, allowing for extremely time-critical tasks—such as registration mark detection or high-speed sorting—to be handled directly by the standard I/O without specialized hardware. Programming is fully compliant with the IEC 61131-3 standard, leveraging the powerful Automation Studio suite.
Communication is a key strength of the X20 series. Every CPU comes standard with a comprehensive set of interfaces, including Ethernet (with an integrated 2-port switch for easy daisy chaining), POWERLINK for real-time communication, two USB ports, and RS232. Depending on the model, integrated POWERLINK and CAN interfaces are also available. Optional RS485 or CAN interfaces can be added without increasing the controller's footprint. For applications requiring additional fieldbus connectivity, all CPUs can be upgraded with one or two interface modules from the extensive X20 product range, supporting protocols such as PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, and Modbus. The controllers are fully compatible with all X20 I/O modules, enabling seamless expansion.
Engineered for demanding industrial environments, the X20 series controllers are completely fanless and batteryless, making them truly maintenance-free. For applications in harsh conditions, the X20c series offers a conformal coating on the electronics modules that protects against condensation and corrosive gases. The effectiveness of this coating is rigorously tested according to BMW GS 95011-4 and EN 60068-2-60 standards. All X20 modules operate reliably across a wide temperature range from -25°C to +60°C and carry a comprehensive suite of international certifications, including CE, UKCA, ATEX Zone 2, cULus, HazLoc, and Germanischer Lloyd (GL) marine certification.
