Product Description

The B&R X90 is a modular mobile automation control system engineered specifically for off-highway and heavy-duty mobile machinery — agricultural harvesters and sprayers, construction excavators and pavers, forestry forwarders and harvesters, and municipal refuse collection and street-sweeping vehicles. Unlike a conventional PLC housed in a protective cabinet, the X90 is built into a die-cast aluminum enclosure rated IP69K, meaning it withstands direct high-pressure steam cleaning (80–100 bar water jet at 80 degrees C from multiple angles), salt spray, condensing humidity, UV radiation, and mineral oil exposure without an external enclosure.

How does the multifunction I/O reduce hardware variants?

Each of the 48 or 60 onboard I/O channels is software-configurable — a single physical pin can be assigned as a digital input, analog input (0–10 V or 0–20 mA), digital output, PWM output, or high-speed counter. This eliminates the need to stock multiple fixed-function I/O modules and allows the same X90 hardware platform to serve different vehicle models with different sensor and actuator topologies. The configuration is defined in B&R Automation Studio and deployed as part of the machine application, not via hardware DIP switches or jumper blocks. Four option board slots accept factory-fit modules for additional analog outputs, relay outputs (2 A per channel), CAN/LIN interfaces, or an integrated safety controller.

What safety functions are integrated?

The X90 with SafeLOGIC option board supports up to 48 safety-rated I/O channels within the same controller, complying with ISO 13849 (PL e/Category 4) and IEC 62061 (SIL 3) for functional safety. This means a single X90 can simultaneously run the machine's standard control program, CAN bus communication with the engine ECU and hydraulic valve controllers, and safety functions such as emergency stop, two-hand control, and safe limited speed — without a separate safety PLC. Programming is done in Automation Studio using pre-certified safety function blocks from the MAP (Mobile Application Packages) library, reducing the certification effort for new vehicle variants.

How does it connect to vehicle networks?

The CPU module provides one POWERLINK real-time Ethernet port for deterministic axis control and I/O update, one standard Ethernet port for service laptops and telematics gateways, and three to four CAN interfaces for communication with diesel engine ECUs (SAE J1939), hydraulic valve controllers (CANopen), and body controllers (LIN bus). RS232 and RS485 serial interfaces are available for legacy GPS receivers, inclination sensors, and weighing terminals. An optional WLAN and Bluetooth interface supports wireless commissioning and diagnostics from a tablet at the vehicle without climbing into the cab. UN ECE-R10 automotive EMC certification ensures the X90 does not interfere with vehicle radio, radar, and telematics systems.
