The Opto 22 GRV-EPIC-PR1 is an Edge Programmable Industrial Controller (EPIC) that uniquely combines deterministic real-time control with powerful IIoT gateway capabilities in a single, compact device. Built around an industrial-grade quad-core ARM processor running Linux with real-time extensions, it provides the reliability required for critical automation tasks while offering the openness and connectivity needed for modern IIoT applications. The controller supports up to 16 groov I/O modules, providing a flexible and scalable solution for a wide range of field device connections.

A defining feature of the GRV-EPIC-PR1 is its dual independent Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, each with its own IP address. This design allows for secure network segmentation, separating trusted control networks from untrusted business or internet networks. Security is further enhanced with a built-in configurable device firewall, user authentication (local or LDAP), TLS encryption, and cryptographically signed firmware builds that prevent unauthorized software from being uploaded to the controller. These layers of security make the EPIC an ideal platform for remote monitoring and cloud-based data integration.

The software ecosystem is equally versatile. The controller comes pre-loaded with a comprehensive suite of tools: groov Manage for browser-based system management, groov View for building custom web-based HMIs, PAC Control for flowchart-based programming with optional scripting, and the CODESYS Runtime Engine for running IEC 61131-3 compliant programs developed with the CODESYS Development System. Node-RED is included for creating IoT data flows, and optional Ignition Edge® provides connectivity to Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Modbus devices via OPC UA. For advanced users, Secure Shell (SSH) access enables custom application development in Python, C/C++, Java, and other languages.

The integrated high-resolution 5-inch resistive touch LCD display provides convenient local access for I/O and network configuration, troubleshooting, and viewing the groov View HMI. The display lifts to reveal the power button, power supply connectors, network interfaces, USB ports, HDMI port, and status LEDs. An HDMI port allows connection to an external large screen for displaying configuration pages and HMIs, which is especially useful in OEM applications where the EPIC system is built into a machine. With an operating temperature range of -20 to +70°C and certifications including UL/cUL (Class 1 Div. 2), CE, and ATEX, the GRV-EPIC-PR1 is built to withstand demanding industrial environments.
