When do you need a clawless socket?

Metal mounting claws grip the inside of a masonry flush box by expanding outward as the claw screw is tightened. This works perfectly in solid brick or concrete walls with standard DIN boxes — but it fails or causes damage in three common situations: hollow drywall boxes where the claw has nothing solid to bite into, plastic flush boxes where the claw teeth can crack the housing, and shallow boxes where the claw mechanism physically will not fit.
