Product Description

The Cylindscan-1000 is a horizontal industrial X-ray CT scanner purpose-built for non-destructive testing and 3D inspection of long cylindrical samples. Unlike vertical-cabinet CT systems that impose strict height limits, the Cylindscan-1000 places samples horizontally and uses coordinated motion between the X-ray source, detector, and rotating sample for spiral CT acquisition — enabling full-volume 3D reconstruction of slender objects up to 2 metres in length.

Why choose a horizontal CT configuration?

Vertical-cabinet micro-CT and industrial CT systems excel at compact, symmetrical parts, but they struggle with samples whose length-to-diameter ratio exceeds typical cabinet dimensions. A 2 m rock core or solid propellant grain simply cannot be accommodated vertically in most lab spaces. The Cylindscan-1000's horizontal architecture solves this by supporting the sample along its long axis while the X-ray source and detector translate horizontally — the scanning envelope grows with sample length rather than being constrained by ceiling height.

How does spiral CT scanning work on the Cylindscan-1000?

Spiral (helical) CT acquisition combines continuous sample rotation with synchronized horizontal translation of the source–detector pair. The sample turns on its long axis while the imaging chain moves along it, tracing a helical trajectory around the object. A proprietary spiral reconstruction algorithm converts this helical projection dataset into a volumetric 3D model. Compared to step-and-shoot circular CT, spiral acquisition eliminates cone-beam artifacts at the scan extremities and produces a seamless volume along the full sample length — critical for detecting internal cracks, porosity, inclusions, and density variations in elongated structures.

What X-ray source options are available?

Voltage Typical Application
180 kV Low-density materials, small-diameter samples, composite structures
200 kV Medium-density materials, standard rock cores, 3D-printed metal parts
225 kV Higher-density geological cores, solid propellant grains, aluminum castings
250 kV Dense metallic samples, maximum penetration for Ø150 mm diameter

The configurable source voltage allows users to match penetration power to sample material and diameter, avoiding over-exposure of low-density objects while retaining the headroom for dense metallic inspection. The 301 × 250 mm flat-panel detector with 3008 × 2496 pixel resolution captures fine internal detail at each angular position.

Typical NDT applications

  • Petroleum geology: Full-diameter reservoir rock core analysis — pore structure, fracture networks, mineral distribution, and fluid flow pathways without destroying the core.
  • Aerospace and defense: Solid propellant grain inspection — detecting debonds, cracks, voids, and density inhomogeneities that affect burn rate and structural integrity.
  • Forestry and materials science: Internal tree trunk structure — ring analysis, decay detection, and wood quality assessment.
  • Additive manufacturing: 3D-printed part validation — internal geometry conformance, porosity mapping, and defect detection in cylindrical printed components.
