Product Description

The Centurion C5 is FW Murphy's flagship configurable controller for reciprocating compressors, screw compressors, and pump systems in hazardous oil and gas installations. Unlike fixed-function compressor panels, the C5 is configured via Windows-based Centurion Configuration Software — no embedded programming required. The base module packs 62 I/O points (32 DI, 12 AI, 8 temperature, 10 DO) and 11 communication ports into a Class I Division 2 / ATEX Zone 2 certified package rated for -40°C to +85°C operation.

What I/O does the base module and expansion provide?

The C5 main module features 32 optically isolated digital inputs configurable as NO or NC with wire-fault detection, 12 analog inputs accepting 0–24 mA or 0–5 VDC at 15-bit resolution (4 configurable for resistive potentiometer measurement), 8 temperature inputs for ungrounded J or K thermocouples with cold junction compensation or 3-wire 100 Ω Pt RTDs, and 10 digital outputs (4 Form C relay, 4 FET source, 2 FET sink) plus 4 analog outputs at 4–20 mA with 16-bit resolution. A magnetic pickup/AC run signal input accepts 30 Hz to 10 kHz. The MX4-R2 expansion module adds 18 thermocouple and 9 RTD inputs; the MX5-R2 adds 24 digital inputs, 10 analog inputs, 16 FET outputs, and 4 analog outputs — scaling to full 3- and 4-stage compressor monitoring.

What communication and networking protocols are supported?

Eleven communication ports span dual 10/100 Ethernet with Device Level Ring (DLR) for network redundancy, two RS232 and two RS485 ports (Modbus RTU server), dual CAN ports (one proprietary for FW Murphy hardware, one J1939 for engine ECU integration), USB Host and Device ports for datalog export and configuration, and optional WiFi. Protocol support includes Modbus RTU/TCP, EtherNet/IP (CIP), and J1939. All configurations are stored in non-volatile Flash memory, with setpoints in EEPROM, backed by a battery-backed real-time clock with ~10 years of unpowered service life.

What control and safety functions are built in?

Eight control loops support closed-loop PID (ISA standard) or open-loop linear strategies for capacity control, suction/discharge pressure regulation, and temperature management. Compressor-specific functions include rod load calculation with alarm and shutdown, no-flow totalization via lubricator pulses, short-cycle start protection, and starts-per-hour limiting for electric motor drives. Ten configurable maintenance timers, a 20-event shutdown history, and a 32-event event history provide auditable safety records. Display options range from a 5-inch monochrome LCD keypad (MV-5-C, -40°C to +85°C) to 7-inch (MV-7T) and 12-inch (MV-12T) sunlight-readable color touchscreens.
