Product Description
The PLR (Part Localization for Robots) series from SICK is a factory-calibrated 3D vision sensor purpose-built for automated robot handling of parts in bins, carriers, and conveyors. Each unit combines a 2D snapshot camera with 3D laser triangulation in a stand-alone device — no external PC, control cabinet, or vision programming terminal is required. Configuration is performed through an integrated web server accessible from any browser. The sensor outputs X, Y, Z coordinates and roll, pitch, yaw orientation angles directly to the robot controller via TCP/IP (XML and CSV protocols).
How does the 2D and 3D hybrid approach improve part localization reliability?
Pure 2D vision struggles with parts that lack distinct surface features; pure 3D systems can fail on low-height or highly reflective parts. The PLR combines a 2D snapshot and a 3D snapshot in a single acquisition, using both modalities to cross-validate part position and orientation. This dual approach robustly handles variations in surface texture, edge definition, and reflectivity. The sensor accommodates part position deviations of up to ±100 mm within the load carrier, and multiple PLR units can be networked for parts lacking clearly defined features in a single view.
Which PLR3200 models are available for different working distances?
The PLR3200 series offers two measurement ranges: the PLR3200-01 (265–515 mm, recommended at 365 mm) with ±0.5 mm and ±0.1° accuracy, and the PLR3200-02 (630–880 mm, recommended at 730 mm) with ±0.8 mm and ±0.2° accuracy. Field of view is approximately 260 × 260 mm at the recommended distance. All models share the same IP65 anodized aluminum housing measuring 225–275 × 90 × 84 mm, 24 V DC supply (10 W typical), and M12 Ethernet and power connectors. Laser source is Class 2 at 635 nm. Operating temperature range is 0°C to +45°C.
