Hinged cover vs increased touch protection — which is better?

These two safety mechanisms solve different problems. A hinged cover (5UB1404) provides a physical barrier — dust cannot settle in the contacts, a splash from a cleaning cloth will not reach live parts, and a curious child cannot poke anything into the socket without first lifting the flap. Increased touch protection (5UB1405) recesses the live contacts deeper inside the body so that a standard test finger cannot reach them even when the socket is open. The hinged cover is superior for dust and splash protection; increased touch protection is the regulatory standard for public buildings under VDE 0620. In workshops, kitchens, and kindergartens, the two are often combined — but within the DELTA profil line, Siemens offers them as separate products, and the 5UB1404 gives you the physical barrier.

Does the flap affect plug compatibility?

The spring flap is shaped to accommodate both standard Schuko (Type F) and Euro plugs (CEE 7/16). Angled and right-angle plugs work as long as the cord exits downward — the flap opens inward and does not obstruct the plug body. The only plugs that may interfere are oversized wall-wart adapters whose body extends beyond the 65x65mm plate footprint.
