Product Description

GE Grid Solutions (now part of GE Vernova) provides the electrical infrastructure and control systems that sit between a power plant's generator and the grid. The Electrical Balance of Plant (EBoP) portfolio covers the complete chain — generator step-up transformers, medium-voltage and low-voltage switchgear, protection and control panels, and grid interconnection systems — engineered as integrated packages for gas turbine, steam turbine, combined cycle, and renewable generation facilities.

What protection relays does GE offer for power plant generators and motors?

The Universal Relay (UR) family is the core protection platform. The G60 Generator Management Relay provides comprehensive synchronous generator protection including differential (87G), stator ground fault (64G), loss of field (40), reverse power (32), and volts/hertz (24) — all in a single device with 16-bit ADC resolution and sub-millisecond trip time for critical functions. The M60 covers medium and large induction motor protection with enhanced thermal modeling and RTD compensation. The F60 handles feeder protection. All UR relays communicate over IEC 61850 with CyberSentry cybersecurity (RBAC, AAA, NERC CIP compliance) and FlexLogic programmable logic for custom automation schemes.

What software platforms manage the broader power plant automation?

The GridBeats portfolio, launched in 2024, brings software-defined automation to power generation and grid management. Zonal Autonomous Control divides networks into self-healing zones. EnergyAPM uses digital twins for predictive diagnostics. The GridNode platform runs advanced automation applications for real-time control and optimization. For traditional SCADA integration, the EnerVista suite provides configuration, monitoring, and data integration tools across the UR relay family. GridOS provides cloud-ready orchestration for larger grid-scale deployments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Electrical Balance of Plant (EBoP) include in a GE scope?

GE's EBoP covers everything on the electrical side from the generator terminals to the grid connection point. This includes generator step-up (GSU) transformers, auxiliary transformers, MV and LV switchgear, bus ducts, protection panels (UR relays), control and metering cabinets, DC/UPS systems, cable systems, and the SCADA interface to the plant DCS. GE can supply individual equipment packages or deliver a full turnkey EBoP solution including engineering, procurement, and construction.

Are GE UR relays compatible with non-GE control systems?

Yes. All UR-family relays support open communication protocols including IEC 61850 (Edition 1 and 2), DNP3 serial and TCP/IP, Modbus RTU and TCP, and IEC 60870-5-104. This means they integrate with any third-party DCS, SCADA, or RTU system that speaks these protocols. The EnerVista software is recommended for configuration but is not required for runtime operation — the relays communicate directly with the control system over standard protocols.
