Why a displacer when float and radar exist?

A float method fails once coating changes its weight, and a non-contact radar struggles with low-dielectric or agitated surfaces - the 244LD measures buoyancy directly through a sealed torque tube, so coating on the outside never reaches the sensing element. The alternative is a guided-wave radar that needs a stilling well and still drifts on density swing.

How does one transmitter cover level, interface, and density?

Because buoyancy depends on the fluid density around the displacer, the same sealed sensor reports level, the level of an interface between two liquids, or the density of a single liquid - three measurements that otherwise need three instruments. The alternative is separate level plus density analyzers with twice the process penetrations.

What about the extreme ends of the process?

It holds ±0.2% from -196 to +400 °C and up to 500 bar, with HART, PROFIBUS PA, or FOUNDATION Fieldbus and SIL 2 certification, so it sits in cryogenic, high-pressure, or hazardous loops without a special variant. The alternative - a general transmitter - would need exotic options and still miss the SIL rating.
