Product Description
The PAC8000 8-channel safety analog input module (part number 8810-HI-TX) is Emerson's SIL 3-rated process safety I/O module for 4–20 mA field transmitters with HART communication. Eight single-ended analog inputs, each configurable for 2-, 3-, or 4-wire transmitter topologies, feed 16-bit ADC conversion at 25 ms update speed — fast enough for safety shutdown loops where analog signals (pressure, level, temperature, flow) are the initiating variables for a safety instrumented function. Each channel supports HART pass-through: the safety logic solver reads the process variable over the 4–20 mA loop while simultaneously collecting HART diagnostic data — device status, configuration checksum, and secondary variables — without disturbing the analog signal. The module is rated for non-incendive field circuits, enabling direct connection to transmitters in Class 1 Division 2 hazardous areas without external IS barriers.
SIL 3 on every channel: safety without compromise
The 8810-HI-TX achieves SIL 3 through a combination of hardware and systematic integrity measures: redundant diagnostic circuits monitor each channel's ADC reference voltage, the analog multiplexer sequencing, and the power supply rails, flagging any deviation beyond the proof-test coverage interval. The module reports open-circuit and short-circuit faults on a per-channel basis — a transmitter whose 4–20 mA loop goes to 0 mA (open) or exceeds 21 mA (short) triggers a channel fault within one update cycle, allowing the safety logic solver to execute the configured fault reaction (trip, vote, or hold last value) before the process variable leaves the safe envelope. The mechanical keying system on the field terminal block prevents a maintenance technician from connecting a replacement transmitter to the wrong channel or plugging a field terminal wired for a different module type into this module — the keying pins are set at engineering time and physically prevent mismatched connections. The module operates from -40 °C to +85 °C without a heater or fan — a critical specification for safety I/O installed in unheated wellhead shelters, remote pump stations, or outdoor analyzer cabinets where a temperature-related failure of the safety input could disable the entire safety instrumented function.
PAC8000 platform architecture
The 8810-HI-TX is one module in the broader PAC8000 distributed I/O platform, which includes general-purpose and intrinsically safe analog input, analog output, digital input, and digital output modules — all sharing the same DIN-rail carrier, the same field power distribution (via the 8914-PS-AC power supply carrier), and the same node services carrier (8752-CA-NS) for communication to the safety logic solver. The platform's modularity means a single PAC8000 node can mix safety and non-safety I/O, HART and non-HART channels, and general-purpose and IS field circuits — all on the same backplane, all powered from the same 24 VDC bus. For a process skid with two safety-critical pressure transmitters (SIL 3), four general-purpose temperature transmitters (HART for predictive diagnostics), and eight digital inputs (valve limit switches), a single PAC8000 node eliminates the traditional separation between the basic process control system (BPCS) I/O and the safety instrumented system (SIS) I/O — while maintaining the functional independence required by IEC 61511 through logical separation in the safety logic solver.
