Why put safety analog inputs in the POINT I/O rack?

Traditional safety meant a separate safety relay or a dedicated safety node alongside the standard I/O. POINT Guard I/O slots into the same 1734 backplane and adapter (1734-AENT/R), so safety and standard I/O share one node and one EtherNet/IP address. The analog version monitors continuous variables — an over-pressure or over-temperature trip — and feeds GuardLogix directly over CIP Safety, TÜV-certified to SIL3 / PLe / CAT 4. The alternative — a standalone safety PLC plus analog card — doubles the hardware and the engineering for the same result.

What does an analog safety input actually buy you?

A discrete safety input only sees on/off; an analog safety input sees the value trending toward the limit, enabling graded responses instead of a hard stop. The 1734-IE4S reads 4–20 mA or 0–20 mA at 16-bit resolution with wire-break and over-range diagnostics, so the controller knows the signal is trustworthy before it acts. That trust lets the safety function stay on the same backplane as the rest of the cell I/O, not siloed in a second system.
