The Allen-Bradley FactoryTalk edge gateway is an industrial edge computer that sits between the machine and the enterprise network, running local applications and forwarding data upward without modifying controller logic. How does it move machine data without touching the PLC?

The gateway runs Docker container apps and a full OPC UA server/client alongside MQTT with Sparkplug B, so it reads shop-floor tags and publishes them to a cloud broker as self-describing payloads. Because the data path lives in the gateway, not the controller, you add cloud reporting without opening the PLC project — a retrofit that takes hours instead of a weeks-long code-change cycle. The alternative — polling the controller from a cloud agent over a VPN — adds load to the scan and exposes the PLC to the enterprise network.

Where does it physically live?

It is a compact DIN-rail or book-mount unit with an IP20 rating and 2× Gigabit LAN ports, built on an NXP i.MX 8M Plus with 4 GB RAM. It drops into the panel next to the switch, draws 24V DC, and runs FactoryTalk Optix and FactoryTalk Remote Access for remote support — no separate industrial PC and no ventilated enclosure needed. The dual LAN ports let you split machine-side and enterprise-side traffic onto separate networks.
