Product Description
The Conair LAC-1 is a capacitive-sensor-based level alarm panel designed for plastics processing plants where resin hoppers, blenders, and buffer bins need reliable high/low level detection. Each sensor input can be individually configured as a high-level or low-level alarm point — or combined on the same mixer to simultaneously detect both overflow and starvation conditions. The capacitive sensing principle means no moving parts contact the material stream, making it compatible with pellets, regrind, powders, and flake without mechanical wear or bridging false triggers.
How does the LAC-1 interface with plant monitoring and control systems?
Beyond its built-in audible and visual alarms, the LAC-1 provides a dry-contact output (one normally-open, one normally-closed) rated at 24 VDC/8 A and 115 VAC/10 A. This volt-free contact pair can be wired directly to a PLC digital input, a PC-based plant monitoring system, or an external stack light for remote alarm annunciation. The two line-voltage outputs can control small pumps, solenoid valves, or conveyor motors directly — for example, starting a vacuum loader when a hopper level drops below the low sensor, or stopping a feed conveyor when the buffer bin reaches full.
How are sensors configured for different material types and vessel geometries?
The LAC-1 works with standard Conair capacitive proximity sensors that thread into the hopper or bin wall. Sensor sensitivity accommodates a range of dielectric constants — from dry virgin pellets to carbon-black-filled conductive compounds to hygroscopic resins with varying moisture content. Detachable sensor cables allow bins and hoppers to be moved for material changes or cleaning without unwiring the controller. Optional extension cables are available in 6 m and 20 m lengths for installations where the controller must be located remotely from the sensing point — common in mezzanine-mounted hopper installations where the control panel is at floor level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the LAC-1 be used with non-Conair capacitive sensors?
The LAC-1 is designed for use with Conair capacitive sensors, which provide a compatible signal interface and sensitivity range. Third-party capacitive sensors may work if their output characteristics match the LAC-1's input specification, but Conair does not document compatibility with other manufacturers' sensors. For installations where existing sensors must be retained, consult Conair for an interface assessment.
How does the LAC-1 handle sensor failure or cable disconnection?
The LAC-1's detachable sensor cables include a secure locking connector, but if a sensor circuit opens — whether from cable disconnection, cut cable, or sensor failure — the controller interprets the open circuit as a level fault and triggers the corresponding alarm output. This fail-safe behavior means a damaged sensor or accidentally disconnected cable generates an alarm rather than silently masking a material outage. For critical applications, the dry-contact output can be wired to a separate alarm monitoring system that differentiates between a true level alarm and a sensor fault based on alarm persistence and context.
