The CAREL pCO3 is a 16-bit programmable controller in the pCO sistema family, designed for HVAC/R applications ranging from chillers and heat pumps to air handling units and compressor racks. With 4 MB of flash memory and a real-time clock, the pCO3 can be programmed via CAREL EasyTools to implement custom control sequences — including both precision temperature regulation and independent safety limit functions. Four hardware sizes provide scalable I/O from compact 5-analog-input panels to 29-digital-output extra-large configurations, eliminating the need for external I/O expansion in most installations. The controller mounts on a standard DIN rail with IP40 front protection and operates from -10°C to +60°C ambient.

What safety limiter functions can the pCO3 implement?

When programmed as a temperature or pressure limiter, the pCO3 enforces the following safety thresholds with configurable differentials:

  • High delivery temperature prevention: Monitors compressor discharge or heat exchanger outlet temperature; triggers an alarm and forces capacity reduction when the threshold is exceeded.
  • High condensation pressure prevention: Monitors condenser pressure via a ratiometric 0-5 V transducer; activates forced capacity control to prevent pressure excursions.
  • Antifreeze protection: Monitors evaporator outlet temperature (typically water or brine); shuts down the circuit if the temperature drops below the freeze threshold.
  • High current prevention: Monitors compressor current draw; reduces capacity or trips the circuit when current exceeds the alarm threshold.

All safety alarms are logged to non-volatile memory with a black box function for post-event diagnostics, and critical alarms require a manual operator reset before restart.

How does the pCO3 integrate with building management systems?

The pCO3 provides native pLAN connectivity for up to 32 CAREL devices — including pGD terminals, expansion I/O modules, and other pCO controllers — forming a distributed control network without external switches. For BMS integration, two serial ports accept field-installable option cards supporting Modbus RTU, BACnet MS/TP or Ethernet, LonWorks FTT-10, Metasys N2, and HTTP/FTP/SNMP for direct web-based monitoring. A programming key interface enables rapid application upload and firmware updates in the field without a PC, and an optional GSM modem supports remote alarm notification and data logging via SMS.

How does the pCO3 compare to the newer pCO5 and pCO5+?

The pCO5 and pCO5+ are the next-generation successors to the pCO3, offering pin-to-pin hardware compatibility and full software compatibility — an existing pCO3 application program loads and runs on the pCO5 without modification. The pCO5+ adds a faster processor, larger memory, and native Ethernet with HTTPS support while retaining the same DIN rail footprint and terminal assignments. For new installations, CAREL recommends the pCO5+; for existing pCO3 sites, the upgrade path is a direct controller swap with no wiring changes or software redevelopment required.
