When do the DC terminals actually matter?

The 1 in the suffix means DC terminals are present, so you can bolt on an external du/dt filter for longer motor-cable runs — keeping winding stress within limits when the feeder between drive and motor is extended — or an external brake resistor for hoist and decelerating loads.
