Product Description

The IC866-0300-4A3-2P is the 30 kW (40 HP) drive in the 480 V IC866 family — 61 A output, Frame 5, IP20 open-chassis with PROFINET RT factory-installed. Thirty kilowatts is a significant threshold in drive panel engineering: it is the power level where output current crosses 60 A, the practical ceiling for standard IEC contactors, 10 AWG motor conductors, and off-the-shelf circuit breakers in a single-row panel layout. Above this, the panel design shifts from assembling standard components to engineering thermal and electrical paths — larger busbars, forced ventilation, deeper enclosures, and coordinated short-circuit protection. This is the drive for machines whose main motor defines the electrical infrastructure of the entire panel: a 40 HP extruder, a large hydraulic power unit, a water treatment transfer pump, a stamping press flywheel motor.

The 61 A threshold and what it means for panel design

At 61 A output, the drive's input current at 480 V is approximately 55 A — requiring a 63 A or 80 A feeder circuit breaker, 6 AWG input conductors, and a line reactor if the supply transformer's kVA rating exceeds 10× the drive kVA. The drive's internal losses at full load are roughly 750 W — manageable in a ventilated cabinet but requiring attention to airflow path: the IP20 chassis pulls air from the bottom and exhausts it at the top, and the cabinet must provide an unimpeded vertical air column. The Frame 5 dimensions are approximately 260 mm wide × 470 mm high × 260 mm deep — the height of a 19-inch rack but the width of roughly half a standard 600 mm panel section, leaving room for input fusing, an output contactor, and terminal blocks alongside the drive. The factory-installed PROFINET RT (-2P suffix) means the drive appears as a standard PROFINET IO device on the PLC network — no separate gateway, no protocol converter, no additional DIN rail module. For a machine builder integrating this drive into a PACSystems RX3i architecture, the drive's entire parameter set is accessible from the PLC engineering tool over the same Ethernet cable that carries the cyclic speed setpoint.

30 kW at 480 V vs. 30 kW at 240 V

The same 30 kW power level is also available in the 240 V class as the IC866-0300-2A3, which delivers 110 A — nearly double the current of the 480 V version. The 480 V model at 61 A represents a fundamentally different electrical design envelope: where the 240 V version demands 1/0 AWG motor cables, a 150 A feeder breaker, and a Frame 6 enclosure, the 480 V version fits in a Frame 5 with 6 AWG conductors and a 80 A breaker. For the same mechanical output power, the 480 V drive is smaller, lighter, and cheaper to wire — but it requires a 480 V supply. If that supply is already present, there is no practical reason to choose the 240 V model for a new installation.
