Product Description
The IC866 series is Emerson's PACMotion variable frequency drive platform — a modular AC drive family spanning 0.75 kW to 250 kW (1–400 HP) across three input voltage classes. Designed for cabinet-mount (IP20), machine-frame (IP55), and outdoor/washdown (IP66) installation, the IC866 covers the full spectrum of industrial motor control: from a fractional-horsepower single-phase conveyor drive to a 250 kW three-phase pump station. Every drive in the family shares the same control architecture — PROFINET RT communication, Safe Torque Off (STO), integrated PID controller, and local keypad — plus a modular expansion backplane for encoder feedback, additional fieldbus protocols, and external operator interfaces.
Voltage class and power selection
The IC866 family organizes into three voltage classes, encoded in the part number as the first digit after the power rating. The 200–240 V class (code -2xx) supports both single-phase (B1, up to 2.2 kW) and three-phase (A3) input — the only class offering single-phase, making it the default choice for light-industrial and commercial applications where three-phase power is unavailable. The 380–480 V class (code -4xx, three-phase only) is the workhorse for European and heavy-industrial installations, delivering higher power density at lower current: the same frame size that delivers 30 kW at 240 V delivers roughly 55 kW at 480 V. The 500–600 V class (code -6xx) serves North American 575 V industrial services, common in Canadian manufacturing and mining operations. Within each voltage class, power ratings are designated by a 4-digit kW×10 code — 0008 for 0.75 kW through 2500 for 250 kW — and output current scales proportionally with the voltage class.
Enclosure strategy: where the drive lives determines which suffix to specify
IP20 (suffix -2x) open-chassis drives are designed for installation inside a control cabinet — the cabinet provides environmental protection, and the drive's internal fan circulates cabinet air through the heatsink. This is the standard configuration for centralized motor control centers (MCCs) and line-up cabinets. IP55/NEMA 12K (suffix -5x) sealed drives mount directly on the machine frame or on a nearby wall without a cabinet — dust-tight and resistant to water jets from any direction. This is the dominant choice in food and beverage processing, where electrical cabinets on the production floor create cleaning obstacles and hygiene risks. IP66/NEMA 4X (suffix -6x) adds protection against powerful water jets and temporary submersion, enabling outdoor installation without shelter — pump stations, irrigation systems, and remote wellheads. The thermal design differs fundamentally between enclosure types: IP20 drives dissipate heat into the cabinet air, requiring cabinet ventilation; IP55/IP66 drives use a sealed heatsink that can be mounted through a cabinet wall (heatsink outside, electronics inside) or fully exposed to ambient air.
