Product Description
The IC220PBI002 is the PROFIBUS-DP network interface unit for Emerson's VersaPoint distributed I/O platform — the head module that connects up to 63 VersaPoint I/O slices to a PROFIBUS-DP master over a single 9-pin D-sub cable. It auto-detects the network baud rate from 9.6 kbps to 12 Mbps and presents the assembled I/O data — up to 176 bytes of input plus 176 bytes of output, or 184 bytes combined depending on DIP switch configuration — as a single PROFIBUS slave device. The VersaPoint I/O modules snap onto the DIN rail to the right of the NIU; the NIU powers the local backplane, scans the modules, maps their data into the PROFIBUS process image, and handles the cyclic data exchange with the master. This is the unit that turns a row of I/O slices into a PROFIBUS-DP station — without it, the I/O modules have no network interface and no way to communicate with a controller.
DP/V1 upgrade: what the -002 brought over the -001
The IC220PBI002 replaced the earlier IC220PBI001 with several added capabilities. Acyclic DP/V1 communication allows a Class 2 master (typically an engineering workstation or an asset management tool) to read and write parameters to individual modules without interrupting the cyclic I/O data exchange with the Class 1 master (the PLC). The fail-safe values feature lets the user configure what each output channel does when PROFIBUS communication is lost — hold last state or switch to a predefined safe value — configurable per module, stored in the NIU, and executed without PLC involvement. Byte rotation for 16-point and 32-point modules corrects the high/low byte ordering mismatch that occurs when a PROFIBUS master expects big-endian data and the VersaPoint modules deliver little-endian data — a configuration checkbox in the NIU instead of byte-swap logic in the PLC program. The DIP switch 8 selects between full DP/V1 mode and backward-compatible DP/V0 mode for drop-in replacement of an IC220PBI001 without changing the PLC configuration.
