Product Description

The M1593A RIOc (Remote I/O Conet Link) is the network interface module that extends Omniflex Maxiflex distributed control systems across plant-wide distances. Installed in Slot 1 of the master base adjacent to the CPU, it bridges the local backplane to the Conet data highway — a ruggedized token-passing, peer-to-peer industrial LAN designed for the electrically noisy, long-distance environment of process plants, water treatment works, and power stations. Up to 7 remote I/O bases, each with its own scanner module (M1249A programmable or M1248A non-programmable), can be distributed along up to 10 km of standard twisted-pair instrument cable — no fiber, no repeaters, no specialized network hardware.

How does the M1593A eliminate remote-side programming?

The AutoScan mechanism automatically identifies every I/O module in every remote base upon power-up or module replacement, building the I/O manifest without any user configuration. The Data Interchange Table (DIT) in the master CPU makes all remote I/O values available as if they were local backplane modules — the programmer reads and writes remote points using the same DIT addresses regardless of physical location. When a remote I/O module is replaced, the scanner automatically reconfigures the new module with the parameters of the old one. This zero-programming architecture means site electricians can swap faulty modules without a laptop, without specialist training, and without stopping the running process.

How does dual-redundant operation work with the M1593A?

In a hot-standby configuration, two M1593A modules are installed — one in the primary controller base and one in the secondary. Both connect to the same Conet network and can access all remote I/O bases. If the primary controller fails, the secondary assumes control with no interruption in remote I/O scanning. The Conet token-passing protocol ensures deterministic data transfer timing — an advantage over collision-detection Ethernet in time-critical applications like boiler skin temperature monitoring (hundreds of thermocouples across a large structure), distributed pump station alarm handling with 10 ms source time-stamping, and geographically dispersed well-field SCADA where running individual cables back to a central PLC would be economically infeasible.
