Product Description
The IC086SLM042SS is the single-mode fiber variant of Emerson's 6-port mini managed industrial Ethernet switch. It shares the same compact chassis, switching engine, and management feature set as the multi-mode IC086SLM042MM — the difference is in the two 100Base-FX fiber ports. Where the MM variant uses 850/1310 nm multi-mode optics rated for 2 km, the SS variant uses 1310 nm single-mode optics with a 30 km link budget.
When do you need single-mode instead of multi-mode?
The decision is almost purely about distance. Multi-mode fiber (50/62.5 µm core) is cheaper to terminate and works with lower-cost transceivers, but modal dispersion limits its practical reach to about 2 km at 100 Mbps. Single-mode fiber (9 µm core) eliminates modal dispersion — 30 km at 100 Mbps is routine, and the same fiber can be upgraded to 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps later by swapping SFP modules. The trade-off is that single-mode termination and fusion splicing require more skill and slightly more expensive transceivers. Use single-mode when the switch sits in a remote wellhead controller, a tank farm PLC, or a pumping station that is physically distant from the control room — places where multi-mode would need a repeater (and another power supply, enclosure, and point of failure) mid-span.
Same ring redundancy, longer reach
The IC086SLM042SS supports Emerson's redundant-ring protocol at the same sub-10 ms recovery time as the multi-mode variant, across the same maximum ring size of 250 nodes. The difference is that when the ring is built with single-mode fiber segments, each hop can be up to 30 km instead of 2 km. This allows a single ring to span a geographically distributed site — a water treatment plant with remote intake structures, or an oilfield with pads spread across kilometers — without intermediate switch cabinets acting as repeaters.
