The IC086SLN050 is Emerson's smallest industrial Ethernet switch — an unmanaged 5-port unit that is 26 mm wide and weighs just 205 grams. It is designed for the simplest industrial networking task: connecting a handful of field devices at the edge of a machine or in a remote enclosure where a managed switch would be overkill. When is an unmanaged switch sufficient?

An unmanaged switch has no web interface, no VLANs, no SNMP, no ring protocol. It forwards every frame to the correct MAC address and stops there. For many machine-level applications — connecting a PLC, an HMI, a vision camera, and an Ethernet I/O block inside the same control panel — this is exactly what is needed. The switch never needs to be configured, there is no management IP to document, and there is no firmware to audit. The cost savings over a managed switch are real, but the decision hinges on one question: do your devices all sit on the same flat network, with no need for traffic segmentation, redundancy protocols, or remote diagnostics? What redundancy does an unmanaged switch still provide?

While the IC086SLN050 cannot participate in a managed ring or spanning tree, it does protect against the most common failure mode on a plant floor: loss of a DC power supply. Dual 12–48 VDC inputs feed independent power regulation circuits — if one supply fails or a wire pulls loose, the switch continues running on the second input without a single packet dropped. A fault alarm relay closes on power loss, giving the control system a hard-wired signal that is independent of Ethernet. With a 3 W typical power draw and a -40°C to +70°C operating range, the SLN050 can be installed almost anywhere and powered from almost any 24 VDC control circuit.
