Product Description
The IC086SLM042MM is the multi-mode fiber variant of Emerson's compact 6-port managed industrial Ethernet switch — purpose-built for connecting edge devices in harsh plant-floor environments where electrical isolation or distance rules out copper. Four 10/100BaseT(X) RJ45 ports serve local equipment, while two 100Base-FX multi-mode fiber ports (SC connector, 1310 nm) link back to the control network over distances up to 2 km.
Why use fiber on the plant floor?
Fiber is not about speed here — the uplinks run at 100 Mbps, same as the copper ports. The practical reasons are electrical isolation and distance. A fiber segment breaks ground loops between cabinets that would otherwise couple motor-drive noise onto the Ethernet physical layer. It also reaches across a facility — 2 km on multi-mode — without repeaters, where copper maxes out at 100 m. For a switch sitting in a remote MCC bucket or at the end of a conveyor line, the fiber uplink is the difference between a reliable link and one that drops packets every time a VFD ramps up.
How does the redundant ring protect the network?
The IC086SLM042MM supports Emerson's redundant-ring protocol with sub-10 ms recovery across rings of up to 250 switches. In a ring topology, one link is logically blocked to prevent a loop. If any single link or switch in the ring fails, the blocked port opens within 10 ms — fast enough that most TCP connections survive without a reset. Combined with triple redundant DC power inputs (two on a 7-pin terminal block, one on a barrel jack), the switch is designed to stay online through a single power supply failure or cable cut.
