Product Description

The PACMotion servo drive — internally the IC830DP series, marketed as PACMotion PSD (Power Supply Drive) — is Emerson's EtherCAT-based AC servo amplifier for synchronous permanent-magnet motors. It is the power-stage half of the PACMotion motion control system: the drive closes the current, velocity, and position loops, while the RX3i PMM345 multi-axis controller generates trajectory profiles and coordinates axes over EtherCAT. Eight power ratings cover 1.1 kW to 16 kW continuous output, split evenly between 120/240 VAC (single/three-phase) and 240/480 VAC (three-phase) input classes.

What does an EtherCAT drive architecture change compared to analog ±10 V?

Traditional servo drives accept a ±10 V analog velocity or torque command from a motion controller — one twisted pair per axis, carrying a voltage proportional to the desired speed or torque. This architecture is simple but limited: the analog signal is susceptible to electrical noise, calibration drift, and ground-loop offsets, and there is no digital communication channel for reading drive parameters, encoder data, or fault codes. EtherCAT replaces the analog command wire with a deterministic 100 Mb/s Ethernet-based fieldbus: the motion controller sends position, velocity, and torque setpoints as digital telegrams at a 250 µs cycle, and the drive responds with actual position, actual current, and status bits in the same telegram. This full-duplex digital link enables features impossible in analog architectures — automatic motor parameter upload from encoder electronic type plate (HIPERFACE DSL), drive-based registration with sub-microsecond timestamping, and coordinated multi-axis start with all axes receiving synchronized trajectory data on the same bus cycle.

120/240 V vs 240/480 V — choosing the right input class

The IC830DP family splits into two voltage classes, designated by the last two digits of the part number: -06 for 120/240 V and -07 for 240/480 V. The 120/240 V class (3 A: 1.1 kW, 6 A: 2.0 kW, 12 A: 4.0 kW, 24 A: 8.0 kW) is commonly deployed in North American and light-industrial settings where single-phase 120 V control power and 240 V three-phase motor power are available from standard distribution panels. The 240/480 V class (3 A: 2.0 kW, 6 A: 4.0 kW, 12 A: 8.0 kW, 24 A: 16.0 kW) doubles the power rating at each current level and is the dominant choice in heavy-industrial and European installations where 400/480 V three-phase is the standard machine supply. All models include an internal regenerative braking circuit with dynamic power distribution across drives sharing a common DC bus — drives on the same DC link share regen resistor capacity, so a decelerating axis can feed braking energy to an accelerating axis rather than dissipating it as heat. The onboard SIL 2 Safe Torque Off function (IEC 62061) removes motor torque without disconnecting drive input power, enabling safety-rated e-stop circuits without a line contactor per axis.
